Under the recommendations of Sport Nova Scotia, Karate Nova Scotia and the support of the Athletics Department of Saint Mary’s University, we will be cancelling karate classes effective immediately until further notice due to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.
Although we may not be able to train together, this does not mean we can not practice and train at home. Feel free to post your best at home “karate training selfie photo” to the clubs facebook group.
A notice will be posted when classes are ready to resume. Thank you for your understanding!
The Saint Mary’s University Shotokan Karate Club of Halifax specializes in teaching Shotokan Karate. We are a non-profit club that supports members who wish to pursue karate for traditional training and fitness, but also those who would like to excel in karate as a competitive sport.
We have been a part of the Saint Mary's University campus community for over 15 years and have classes taught by volunteer, black belt instructors for both beginner and advanced level karate students. With karate making it's debut at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan it's an exciting time to be a part of the karate community whether you enjoy karate for its traditional roots or for sport.
If you're looking to start karate for the first time and are searching for a club, read our article on Finding A Good Dojo.
Benefits of joining the SMU club include the opportunity to:
Karate instruction includes learning basic techniques (punches, blocks, kicks, strikes), kata (forms), sparring and physical self defense applications. If you would like to learn more check out our "About Karate" page.
